Reacting to Parton’s reported death at the age of 80, Obi, in a tribute shared on his X handle, said her most enduring legacy was the person she remained despite achieving fame, wealth and global success.
He said Parton’s humble upbringing in rural Tennessee shaped the compassion, humility and generosity she displayed throughout her life.
“Dolly Parton’s greatness, to me, goes far beyond her extraordinary music. It is in the person she remained despite the fame, wealth and success,” Obi wrote.
According to him, the music icon came from a poor and humble family but never forgot her roots, carrying the values of love, faith, resilience and family into both her music and her life.
Obi said Parton’s songs resonated deeply with people because she sang about love, heartbreak, hardship, loneliness, hope and the struggles of ordinary people from a place of understanding.
He also praised her compassion and generosity, particularly towards children, the poor and those in need.
“I admire Dolly Parton not simply because she became a great musician, but because success never made her forget where she came from,” he said.
Obi added that Parton transformed her humble beginnings into music that comforted millions and a life that continued to inspire people across the world.
“For me, that is her greatest song: the sound of a good heart that never forgot its roots,” he added.
